What The Free?! … | October 2020

Can you believe it's October?  My favorite month of the year (along with August)! I am a horror movie fanatic and love all things Halloween. For right now, we can focus more on creeping into the pumpkin spice flavors and slightly cooler temperatures.

With temperatures easing up a bit, it’s also a great time to get outdoors and relieve some stress by exercising. With numerous free jogging trails, swimming laps with waived entrance fees, virtual classes, and even free outdoor gym classes available, it’s never been easier to get in a good workout while soaking up some Vitamin D.

Outdoor Group Fitness Classes

Currently, Gainesville Health and Fitness is offering free outdoor classes. This is the perfect opportunity to meet new people and bring a buddy.  They are currently offering fitness walking, outdoor conditioning, PiYo, yoga, body flow, and even zumba! There are even specialty classes on Saturdays from 9am to 10am including kids yoga and S.W.E.A.T. which is a full body workout.

Did you know?: Did you know that group fitness classes have become increasingly popular in the last twenty years? A 2016  study found that 95% of individuals who started a program involving group fitness were more likely to finish versus 76% of individuals who tackled the program alone. There is actually a term coined the Kohler Effect which is when a person does not want to feel like the weakest link in a group setting thus pushing themselves to work harder.

Pools Open for Swimming Laps

If group fitness isn’t exactly your thing or if you’re looking to cool off in the water instead, Gainesville has opened two swimming pools for lap swimming only. Even better, they are waiving entrance fees during the phased reopening!

Did you know?: Did you know that swimming burns almost 30% more calories per hour than running? Also, the largest pool in the world is 7 times the size of a football field and can be found in Casablanca, Marroco! Swimming actually became an olympic sport in 1896.

Dwight H. Hunter Pool has reopened for lap swimming, and the address is posted below.

1100 NE 14th St, Gainesville, FL

H. Spurgeon Cherry Pool has also reopened for lap swimming, and the address is posted below.

Running Trails

Fortunately, running trails are almost always free and full of gorgeous views of nature! Running is a great way to destress.

Did you know?: Did you know, running for just 30 minutes a day can significantly boost a person’s mood, sleep quality, and concentration levels?  If you also love listening to music while running, your performance can actually increase by up to 15%!

The Susan Wright Trail is a perfect spot to getaway and enjoy a nice jog. The trail totals about 4.8 miles in length and is a looped trail. For parking, I recommend going to the Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail Parking site located close to SE 85th Blvd, Gainesville, FL.

Alfred A. Ring Park is another great area where you can catch serene scenic views overlooking Glen Springs Run and Hogtown Creek. This trail is perfect for walking or jogging. There are also picnic areas under a pavilion if you want to rest afterwards. This park is located at 1801 NW 23rd Blvd. Parking is available at the Elks Lodge.

Virtual Fitness Sessions

If you’re still hesitant to engage in group fitness environments or to swim in a pool, there are also free virtual fitness classes available!

Did you know?: Did you know that yoga is over 5,000 years old? It is estimated that 36 million people around the world practice yoga regularly. In fact, the number of Americans practicing yoga has increased by 50% in the last four years!

Our very own Broker, Tanya Chappell, teaches Strength and Focus Yoga and meditation classes at Gainesville Health and Fitness. Since she knows not everyone feels comfortable attending in-person classes yet, she is streaming her classes for free on her Facebook page, Yoga Tanya Chappell. I have taken a few myself and highly recommend it!

The link below is for additional virtual yoga sessions hosted by a team of instructors in Jacksonville, FL. The classes range from  beginner’s classes to advanced sessions so there is something for everyone. For added relaxation, bring your computer or phone outside (backyard, balcony, patio, or even the beach!) and get your virtual workout in!
