What The Free?! August 2021

It is officially my birthday month! What better way to celebrate than taking a long stroll along some of the gorgeous trails in the Alachua County area. I recently went hiking in Arizona and loved exploring Antelope Canyon, Cathedral Rock, and so many other areas.

However, it’s hard to beat some of Gainesville’s beautiful, lush trails during the warm summer months. What’s better than a late afternoon hike to decompress after a long day? Taking your pet with you for the walk! This month, I am focusing on some beautiful pet friendly trails of different distances. Send us some photos of you and your furry friends strolling one of these gorgeous trails, and we would love to include it in our next newsletter!

Check out some trails in Mill Creek Preserve! Located in Alachua, FL, this preserve features 5 miles of paths. Some of the featured trails are the easy 0.6 mile Marsh Trail, the 3 mile West Trail, and the 1.4 mile Providence Trail. This area features the southernmost extent of Applachian hardwood forest, small waterfall and pine flatwoods. American Beech trees can also be observed. This is a great spot for you and your pooch!

This gorgeous preserve offers 5 miles of walking trails which are also suitable for off-road bicycling, horse-back riding, and wildlife viewing. There is also a 0.5 mile fitness trail with 7 work-out stations offering a great opportunity to exercise outdoors! This trail makes for a more robust hike with your furry companion.

This pet friendly trail is perfect for those looking for paved trails. There is an equestrian trail, accessible amenities, restroom facilities, and a water fountain. With wider trails, this is a great spot to bring the whole family for a serene outdoor walk.

Located in High Springs, this park is located along the banks of the lovely Santa Fe River and features sinkholes, hardwood hammocks, river swamps and sandhills.

O’Leno State Park offers visitors the opportunity to unwind in a natural setting. Relax with a day of hiking with your pet along the shaded trails. The Santa Fe River is the perfect spot to launch a canoe or to enjoy fishing. Pavilions are also present along the river’s edge, great for picnicking and relaxing.
