The calendar says fall is almost here. The Florida weather? Well… it may need a little more convincing.
Even without the crisp temperatures and changing leaves, September brings its own little hints of fall to Gainesville. From farm animals and blooming wildflowers to outdoor concerts and evenings downtown, there are plenty of ways to welcome a new season—and you don’t have to spend a thing to enjoy them.
If you’re ready to get out of the house and enjoy Gainesville this September, we’ve rounded up a few local activities that are completely free.
Make Some Barnyard Friends
Nothing says a new season quite like an afternoon on the farm.
Barnyard Buddies returns to Morningside Nature Center this September, giving children and their adults the chance to meet some of the farm’s cows, chickens, sheep, and pigs.
Visitors can learn about the animals and even help staff with their afternoon feeding. The program itself is completely free, although the animals happily accept produce donations like carrots, apples, squash, sweet potatoes, and melons.
It’s simple, outdoors, educational—and honestly, spending an afternoon with cows and sheep sounds like a pretty great way to welcome fall.

Find Fall Color Among the Pines
We may not get the dramatic changing leaves of fall like up north, but Florida has a colorful fall season of its own.
On September 26, Morningside Nature Center kicks off its Fall Wildflower Walks, a series of free guided walks through the preserve.
Nature interpreters lead visitors among the pines to discover the purples, yellows, and pinks that begin blooming during the season. It’s a peaceful way to spend a Saturday morning while seeing a side of Florida fall that can be easy to overlook.
Just grab a comfortable pair of walking shoes and you’re ready to go.

Spend a Friday Night Under the Stars
Warm September evenings aren’t such a bad thing when they mean we can still enjoy live music outside.
The City of Gainesville’s Free Fridays Concert Series continues throughout September at Bo Diddley Plaza, bringing a different local or regional band to the stage each week.
The series features everything from classic rock and reggae to R&B, soul, funk, blues, and more.
No tickets, no admission—just find a spot at the plaza and enjoy a Friday night downtown.

Take Your Workout Outside
If your idea of welcoming a new season involves slowing things down a little, you can take your yoga practice outdoors at Bo Diddley Plaza.
The City of Gainesville offers free yoga instruction at the plaza throughout the week, giving you an easy excuse to get outside, move around, and enjoy some fresh air without paying for a class.
Morning yoga or an evening class downtown? We’ll take either.

Dance Your Way Into the Weekend
Maybe your version of fall fun needs a little more movement.
Smooth Flava Dance Parties bring free community line dancing to Bo Diddley Plaza on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Whether you already know the steps or you’re figuring them out as you go, it’s an easy way to try something new and enjoy an evening downtown.
No dance partner required—just bring yourself and be ready to move.
