Local Highlight | August 2020

When did coffee become so popular? If you are like me your newsfeed is often filled with the perfected coffee cup shot. When in reality, coffee has been a part of our lives for hundreds of years.

Over the last decade, we have saw the popularity of coffee and related drinks soar, along with an increase in coffee shops A good coffee shop creates a warm, homey feel while creating a place where people can sit and work in relative privacy. This is why coffee shops have overtaken establishments such as libraries in becoming the go-to location for study groups, freelancing, and professionals working from home, which is a growing trend. Coffee shops make the perfect place for informal meetings and discussions, thanks to their relaxed ambiance.

Thankfully for us coffee drinkers, Gainesville, and the surrounding areas are no stranger to the coffee-culture trend. Here’s is a run-down of some of our local options:

Coming Soon

Patti Cakes, Tioga

I was happy to see Patti Cakes is coming to the Tioga Town Center to fill the space vacated by Starbucks. The large front window has always given off a Friends vibe to me and its central location provides the perfect stop in between appointments.

The Tioga store should be open in late September. Until then you can enjoy their creations at the Haile Village Center location.

Joel's Coffeehouse, Newberry

Joel’s Coffeehouse is a mother and son shop opening soon in the heart of Newberry. While they have yet to announce an opening date, I have been stalking their Facebook in anticipation of the big day.

The first thing on my list to try is an affogato, which is an Italian-based dessert. I’ve heard of these but have never had the opportunity to try one. It’s a scoop of vanilla ice gelato or ice cream “drowned” by a shot of hot expresso.

For the at home brewer:

Sweet water Organic Coffee Co.

Sweet water Organic Coffee Co. is a local coffee roaster located in Gainesville on South Main Street. They are deeply committed to fair, direct, and transparent trading relationships with small-scale coffee farmers and their cooperatives throughout the world’s coffee lands. They are members of the Fair-Trade Federation, as well as the association of North American retailers

While they don’t have a storefront, you find out where their product is sold and order directly from their website:

These next two shops both serve their products.

The Talented Cookie Co, High Springs

A hidden gem! The Talented Cookie is located in High Springs and is one of my favorite stops. I’ve borrowed a chair to work a few hours and stopped by to grab a pick-me-up while antiquing with friends.

They offer a wide- variety of drinks and treats. My personal favorite is the iced latte with coconut and vanilla.

You can follow them on Instagram at thetalentedcookieco

Floregon, Trenton

This family-owned wellness store not only offers organic smoothies and coffees but also has herbal and plant remedies. Stop by to grab a drink and check out their eco-friendly goodies.

Drive-thru Only

Ellianos, Alachua

During quarantine my daughter I discovered Ellianos in Alachua. They offer hot and iced coffee options, smoothies, and have some food choices. Even as things have opened back up, we still find ourselves hitting a back road for a cup a coffee. Overall, it’s a nice drive and a great way for us to spend some uninterrupted time together.

Whether you are looking for a place to work, to take a mental break and grab a pick-me-up, or add to your home brewing options, I hope you’ll consider one of these options. A few are off the beaten path but well work the drive.

Happy brewing!
