Winterizing in Florida Climate
Although some of us can harken back to different years where we have had a few days of hard freezing conditions and even some snow here in north central Florida, it’s not common for us to see temperatures below freezing for extended periods of time. Given the unpredictability of mother nature and our desire to protect our assets it’s only prudent that we take measures that may cost some money now but save us from financial hardship later. Here are a few preventative actions that can be taken to ensure that we are not hit hard by nature’s unpredictability.
If freezing temperatures are expected, you shouldwrap any water pipes that are exposed and/or above ground. Also consider allowing faucets inside the house to run at a very low drip. This will allow a continuous flow in the system and keep water that is above the freezing temperature inside of the pipes.
Caulk and seal possible leaks around your doors and windows.
Change the HVAC filter. This also should be done you’re around at 3 to 4 week intervals. Some homes are equipped with longer duration HEPA type filters.
For safety reasons it is also prudent to check the function and change the batteries of your smoke/co2 detection devices since with the use of any warming device there’s a possibility of fire and/or smoke.
Make sure your attic insulation is at a minimum of 12 inches thickness.
Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans so that the hot air is blowing from the ceiling towards the floor. This will help your heating system run more efficiently.
Enjoy our warm Florida climate and give yourself the comfort of knowing that you are prepared, and your asset is protected should nature throw you a curve ball.
