What The Free?! … | December 2020

I cannot believe it’s already the end of December, and we’re so close to 2021! This year has certainly been a rollercoaster to say the least. I hope the holidays have been a time for you to relax and spend some time with family and friends. I have been taking more time to appreciate the things I have and might have previously taken for granted.

You might have heard of the 12 days of Christmas. With this month’s edition, I wanted to list out twelve local places you should visit in or around the Gainesville area. Though some of the following locations are not free, they are low cost and  a great spot to check out! Each month, a different hotspot will be listed. While you’re at the listed site, snap a photo and tag us or send it to our team! If you can visit all twelve locations by December 2021, our team will gift you a $50 gift card!

Happy Holidays and see you in the new year!

January- Ben Hill Griffin Stadium

Check out one of Gainesville’s most popular attractions! The astonishingly large football stadium can fit over 88,000 fans! Though the stadium is usually closed during the off season, strolling around it is still a site to see. Go Gators!

February - La Chua Trail

This trail leading to Alachua Sink is a great place to explore and is easily accessible. Be careful as there is a high chance of seeing gators and wild horses roaming around.

March- University of Florida Bat House

Being one of the world’s largest bat houses, this is a wonderful site to visit with family. Bats normally emerge about 15 to 20 minutes after sunset so be sure to plan your trip accordingly. Heavy rains may keep bats from emerging, so March is a great time to increase your chances of seeing them before the rainy season begins.

April - Depot Park

Depot Park is a great location to visit with the kids. Though the splash pads are currently closed, it is still a fun place to walk, cycle, fly kites, or just hang out under the pavilion.

May - Devil's Millhopper

This sinkhole filled by a miniature rainforest features numerous trails and is the perfect way to spend a sunny day.

June- Florida Museum of Natural History

This museum specializes in preserving and interpreting Florida’s biological diversity and cultural heritage. There is also a must-see butterfly exhibit!

July- Swamp Head Brewery

This brewery was founded in 2008 and brews world-class beers. What better way to spend a warm summer night than trying a new locally brewed beer!

August- Bluefield Winery

August is considered muscadine grape season. Pick your own grapes at this family owned winery or enjoy wine tasting. If you are able to stop by during June and July, you can also try their specialized blueberry wine.

September- Carson Springs Wildlife

Check out this local wildlife sanctuary which features walking or motorized vehicle tours. With 275 acres, this sanctuary is home to 30 different species of rare and endangered animals. According to the website, all donations go directly toward animal care and conservation.

October- Santa Fe Teaching Zoo

This 10 acre zoo is home to over 70 different species of animals and is maintained by about 100 students. There are native and exotic species including bald eagles, capuchin monkeys, kangaroos, otters, and many more. The quarter mile trail is stroller and wheelchair accessible.

November- Satchel's Pizza

Satchel’s Pizza is a must-try restaurant in Gainesville! This yummy spot opened in 2003 and showcases a beautiful, quirky atmosphere. You can choose to eat in a van, greenhouse, or even under a plane. There is local art, handmade sodas, live music, and even a playground for the kids!

December- Downtown Gainesville

downtown gainesville, florida at night

To end the year, I highly recommend walking around Downtown Gainesville. The Union Street Farmers’ Market in Bo Didley Plaza is usually lined with live music and vendors. At night, check out a local play or movie at Gainesville’s beloved Hippodrome Theater then grab some yummy food at Harry’s or Dragonfly. The Alachua County Library is also the perfect spot if you’re looking for a new book or trying to fulfill your quest for knowledge.
