What The Free?! … | May 2020

It’s that time of year; lots of rain showers and pollen. However, the weather has also been warming up making it the perfect time to get outdoors. Gainesville offers some of the best preserves in Florida. Here are just a few of the local walking trails:

Sweetwater Preserve

Sweetwater Preserve is a fantastic location to stroll through the unpaved paths. There are bike trails and hiking trails available. There are also an array of birds and butterflies that can be seen. This trail is usually open from 8am to 7:30pm every day. Located at 309 SE 16th Avenue, Gainesville, FL.

Cofrin Nature Park & San Felasco Hammock

Looking for a shorter trail? Cofrin Nature Park offers a half mile hiking trail with views of the wetlands. Once a horse farm, most of the park is returning to its original succession as a forest. Hardwood trees can be seen along with Beville Heights Creek. There are also numerous wildflowers. This park is open every day from 7am to 6pm. Located at 4810 NW 8th Avenue, Gainesville, FL.

Want to see one of Florida’s oldest and largest hardwood forests? Journey out to San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park! With stunning scenery, off-road biking, and birdwatching, this park can allow for a full day of fun. The hours are currently 8am to 8pm each day. This park is located at 11101 Millhopper road, Gainesville, FL.

Looking for trails with plenty of shade on a hot summer day? Check out Loblolly Woods Nature Park. This is the perfect location for jogging or biking. The park hours are from dawn to dusk daily. This park is located at 3315 NW 5th Avenue, Gainesville, FL.

La Chua Trail

One of my personal favorites is La Chua Trail. It is short but filled with gorgeous scenery and a high chance of seeing alligators, wild horses, and other wildlife close up. It is located at the north end of Payne’s Prairie. After a 1.3 mile walk, there is an observation tower that is usually available unless the ground is too wet. There is usually a small fee for this park, but it is absolutely worth it. The address is 4801 Camp Ranch Road, Gainesville, FL 32641.

If you have ever walked any of these trails or have any other recommendations, we would love to hear about it. Despite the tough month we have encountered, I hope you and your families stay safe!
